I’m pleased to share some meaningful news from my academic life: I have been appointed
Training Program Director for UBC Plastic Surgery.
While most of my patients know me for my clinical and surgical work, education has always
been a central part of my career. Moving forward from my role as Director of the UBC Resident
Cosmetic Clinic, this new role allows me to help further shape how future plastic surgeons are
trained and assessed— here in British Columbia, with the Royal College and beyond.
Why This Matters in the Clinic
Patients sometimes ask why teaching is so important to me when I already have a busy practice.
The answer is simple: teaching makes me a better surgeon.
Working with residents means I constantly:
- Explain my decision-making clearly
- Stay at the cutting edge with research and advancements in our field
- Reflect thoughtfully on technique, judgment, and outcomes
- Collaborate within a team that values precision and safety
Academic surgery is demanding — and it keeps me honest! My patients benefit from a practice
environment that prizes transparency, continuous learning, and professional accountability.
A Coaching Philosophy Shaped by Sport
Sport has taught me that meaningful progress rarely comes from shortcuts — it comes from
attention to detail, consistent practice, and supportive coaching.

- Never rush confidence; build it
- Balance high standards with respect and encouragement
Good surgeons are made through repetition, reflection, and mentorship — not bravado. My goal
is to help faculty develop technically excellent doctors who also communicate clearly, listen
well, and treat patients as people, not cases.
What Patients Can Expect
In my practice, you may occasionally meet residents working alongside me. They are carefully
supervised, and your care and safety always remain my responsibility. Many of our patients
enjoy being part of a teaching environment; it brings an added level of attention, curiosity, and
warmth to the clinical experience.
And for those who prefer a private-consultation approach, rest assured — that remains fully
respected and absolutely available.
Looking Ahead
The UBC Plastic Surgery program is full of bright, motivated residents and dedicated faculty.
Leading this next chapter is a privilege. It reminds me daily that surgery is not static; it evolves,
and we evolve with it.
